As long as there's enough of the 'almost round' hole to stop the ball-joint rotating as it is tightened, the taper produces a large frictional force once the nut is tight. A 10mm wide ring of contact surface sounds plenty, but I expect there would have been a bit more when new, before corrosion from above started. Dave.
