[T3] [T-3] CAM GEAR SELECTION/MATYCHING , GOOD INFO FOUND

LISTEES,

I called many machine shops today and foud one in National City
and I felt that the owner prided his work on quality because he
does not sell rebuilt cases in exchange for cases, he believes he shuold
study the old case first before accepting it. He only sellS fully built
engines
with only german parts. He told me he only accepts german cams and
lifters for exchanges. Everything must be german, he prided himself of
being from the old school of VW thought. (phone: 619-691-8395 plug!!).

I aked him about cam matching and he told me that the VW factory does this
on
a routine bases. They start with gears with a pitch and other varibles with
a
deviation of 0 (zero) then the following +1,+2,+3,-1,-2 and -3 . Each
number
indicates a deviation of
1/100th of a mm from the base zero. All german cams have aluminum gears.
The new OEM cams only come with the number 0 (zero) deviation so no matching

is possible with these. the zero is just a comprimize. When he builds an
engine , he starts with ten cams of various numbers and checks for float,
the
most floating one is the best and will last the life of the car. His
experience is that if an engine requires a cam with -3 deviation and
a + 3 deviation cam is installed eventually a groung gear will result
because
of slight binding, you may not see it for the life of the engine but if
driven
aggressively it will show up quicker. He said that what I have
experienced on my gear is very expected, because of
aggressive driving.

The zero deviation installed on this engine will last longer
than the later but will wear eventually in a bad way if abused by me
abused. The only zero cam gear that will last without
this tweeking is the straight steel noisy gear that I was thinking about.
He got me thinking, He will sell me a matched newly reground cam/gear
assembly if I bring my case with all the goodies ready for the same price
of the sale. So guys if you have an original cam that came with your engine
take note of the deviation number. If you need a custom grind, regrind
your cam or find or keep your original gear. I will buy steel
or get it matched, still thinking.
