Hey dudes! I found some additional problems in my engine. There is a hairline crack in the main bearing journal (that steel backed bearing) . I studied the suspected crack with a magnifiying glass and it looked like a stain to me . I decided to pull out the original VW bearings that this case had when I bought it at the junkyard in a muddy condition before I knew what line boring was or that these were Magnesium, or that these engines did not have a oil filter . my engine was bought already with most parts missing from the outside I think it was a bus engine. This was over two years ago. I think this engine was never opened because everything said VW on it . Anyhow I found my ORIGINAL old VW bearings and one side also had the crack stain so I assumed that the 'crack' was already there and it was ancient. I cleaned the bearing journal, pulled the dowel or pin and used the blow torch to heat it up. The crack stain did shoW up as a real crack , oil bubbled out of a widening crack and I found out how deep it was , the crack went all the way into the bottom of the dowel pin hole. Last night I realized that the case was unuseable even for line boring. I still have the original T-3 case, this one needs serious line boring because all bearing journals have the old bearings imprints with all lettering stamped on there. I either need to get a rebuilt case or have my case line bored. The crack that was found was preserved without further damaged by my counterweighted/balaced crank, balaced cylinders and rods. The bearing surfaces look exactly as I remember, not prestine but not pounded as the other case, even though I put in 50,000 mile of my own , this is very interesting and desireable. A balanced crank will prevent damage or further damage to an engine. I recommend this to everybody who drives alot or drives fast. If I would have left the uncounterweighted crank, the engine probably would have developed a larger crack more destruction would have been the result and probably much sooner, by the way I drive. My engine should have lasted over 150,000 miles if my cam gear wouldn't have broke, but I have other questions on that in an other e-mail. I need to get a rebuilt case or rebuild my case, does anyone know where I can get or have a good rebuilt empty case for cheep bucks ? I have never looked into this but now I know I have to .
