That's my method too, but it isn't original so you might not want to do it on a show vehicle. Also, tap out the steel mandrel end to stop it rusting. In fairness, the cut in the rubber is easy to reseal with modern adhesives, so that's a pretty good alternative to a pop-rivet. Dave.
