My problem with leaky valve cover gaskets is when they do leak, I remove the valve covers & the bottom of the gasket(s) appear to hve been sucked off the surface of the covers. Kinda bow shaped. Seems that if they wer put in "wet" they'd be more suseptable to this. I do add a small amount of gasket seal to the valve covers.
