RE: [T3] Steering gearbox luibrication

I don't think the factory installs ATF in the power steering Russ,
usually it's the maintainance mechanics. ATF is abrasive, I've used it to
buff out heavy oxidation on cars (works good too). Redhead Steering(Seattle)
told me to use light hydraulic oil in my Saganaw Boxes.
(back to topic) I use a 90-140 wt hypoid gear oil (grease if you will)
in all my manual steering boxes (VW, Volvo and Saganaw). It doesn't contain
abrasives like ATF.

If you stop to think about it, just about any weight oil should work. A lot
of domestic cars with power steering use ATF to lubricate their steering
sectors.
