I've had a little more time to think about this, and I still think the thing to do is to adjust the idle upwards a bit. You may have to do this cold at first, but I suspect that the idle is just set very low and now you need to get it back up into the normal range. You really can't pull the dist without disturbing the timing, so I would check that next, then up the idle if it is still low. It is certainly possible to the engine into such a state that it really can't bootstrap itself back up to speed. I think this might be even more likely if the timing is wrong.
