Maybe the map light/heater lever illumination?

Bottom face of Squareback license light was a chrome plate with 2 
plastic windows. Late in the game they deleted the chrome plate.

I think they just started using the cheaper Beetle lever. All the 
early type 3s used a lever with a plastic handle that was angled on 
the end around the button. In 73 it got flat topped handle.
