Actually what you should do is slowly increase the RPM while watching the voltage. The voltage will rise with increasing RPM up to some point, and then it will level off. This leveled off voltage is the charging system regulating voltage and is what you are after. The voltage at idle does not tell you anything useful. > I also checked some part numbers (this is a 73 Fastback): > > Distributor 0 231 163 027 > ECU 0 280 000 048 (or 311 906 021E) > Engine (serial No.): U5078125 These numbers are all consistent with a FI MT 73 type 3. > What do these numbers tell you about my engine? I can't remember the timing for a 73 off hand. It's either TDC or 5 deg BTDC. I'll look at the Bentley and some other sources tonight. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
