Immaculate maintenance, cautious and considerate driving (both to other drivers and respecting the engine i.e. warm-ups, no over-revving, etc.). I don't know about 600K for an air-cooled dub first rebuild. Personally, I don't have the patience to drive like that :D Back in the day of traveling salesmen I can see this kind of mileage on a car, before airtravel became so prevalent.
