Re: [T3] Questions On Engines

Ok, time for my 2 cents worth here. GEX....... patooie, I spit on there
feet..... well, maybe I just give them dirty looks and the EVIL EYE..... but
the feeling is the same.

Someone came to me with an engine built buy a local shop... stocker 1600. It
was a FI engine, in other words, FI heads on it. He had driven this engine
for about 5,000 miles and it had always just been a bit on the hot temp
side. When he came to me, he could not drive more than an hour without the
engine getting very warm.

So I check out all the variables.. Timing, points dwell, Valve lash....
Cooling items.. all were OK. Then a week later it just about froze up on the
kid.. so I had to take it apart. When it was time to pull the rockers shafts
off... oh my, It has GEX stamped on the heads. hum, part number looks
funny.... they were bug FI heads with the first 3 numbers stamped over with
311...... ok, lets get um off and see whats up. They were stepped bug
heads.... fly cut so deep the heads CCd at 40cc, a far cry from the stock
51cc... this poor kid was running a VERY high compression ratio, like almost
9 to 1 with deck height clearance figured in. Both heads had a crack from the
exhaust valve seat to the spark plug hole and one between the valve seats...
at 5,000 miles.

I took them by the shop that had built the engine, and showed them. They said
they had used GEX heads from a vendor for 2 months... and that they had to
put at least half of the engines right with new heads. Well, they should have
caught the fly cut and compression problem at assembly time..... shows how
you should always try to get someone that cares when they put the engine
together. If you can read the book, then try to do it yourself like the
people on this page always say.

I put 2 new Mexican heads on for the kid and the car runs great.... no heat
problems. I would like to add that this engine had the lower compression.
dished top pistons in it.... think what trouble there would have been with
normal stock flat top pistons. Can you say Wholly Burning Square Back Bat
Man?????

Thanks for listening, Pat@volksclocks
