Re: [T3] Oil filter installation

Jim,

On CT and CZ engines the oil filter screws directly into a special
cylindrical flange cast into the main crankcase. It is in the same
position as on the Type 4 engine but it screws in almost horizontally as on
the Wasserboxer motors and it screws in directly to the crankcase whereas
the Type 4 filter is screwed in upwards and virtically and uses an
intermediary oil filter mounting flange which is also bolted to the
crankcase. A clear picture of the differences between the filter
arrangement on the CT and CZ engines as opposed to the Type 4 engines can
be seen on pages 9 and 10 of the VW parts microfiches for Type 2
Transporters from 1980 models. These same diagrams are in the ETKA CD-ROM
parts catalogue.

The 1600 upright fan engines currently in use on Mexican Beetles (ACD
series motors) and Brazilian Type 2 vehicles (UGA series motors) are
different again in that their full flow filter is screwed into a flange
which is bolted to the oil pump in a style made by EMPI and others in the
past.
