Just because it turns over smooth, does not mean that all is OK. You could
have lost a rod bearing.  Look at the tops of the pistons, and see it it
looks like they have been hitting the head.
Since you have it torn down this far, I would go ahead and split the case.
If you want, you CAN pull a rod without splitting the case, but that is the
hard way.
