Re: [T3] Second Jerusalem panel van photos

<x-charset iso-8859-1>Hi,

You're right, cars don't rust here much, at least not in Jerusalem, and
especially not in the desert. I was once offered a 1958 Ford Prefect that
had spent its whole life in Beer Sheva, which is in the Negev desert. I was
told it didn't have a speck of rust on it.

The problematic areas for old cars here are the costal regions, but what
gets them there is not so much moisture but the salt.

There is nowhere in this country that a car will be wet all the time like in
England or Ireland. We do get plenty of rain here most years (we just had a
spectacular rainstorm that went on solidly for about 3 days - one town got
310mm of rain in 2 days!), but the weather will always be dry for long
enough for a car to dry out. And then of course we have no rain at all from
about May to October.

The heat can be a weather hazard to old cars. It will kill off all of your
rubber, and fade your paint. The few rubber seals that were left on my T34
when I got it were all completely dried out. It can also crack dashboards
and other plastic parts like switch knobs.

As to bringing the car to Norway, first you'd have to find out whether the
old guy is actually willing to sell it ....

Regards,

Daniel Baum
