People seem to either love or hate that smell; there seems to be 
no middle ground. I happen to be one of the former.  ;-)  Glad you 
found and fixed the boot. You might want to drain and refill again 
after you get some miles on her, but the fine slurry of metal in the 
magnetic drain plug sounds absolutely normal.
