You didn't mention whether the problem was front or rear, but it could be happening back there too. Another possibility (this happened to me) is that your flexible brake lines are rotting from the inside out. There is enough force from the master cylinder to push fluid past the blockages, but when you release the brake pedal, there isn't enough return pressure to move the fluid back towards the reservoir. You will be able to see this when bleeding the brakes - If the pedal depresses smoothly on one or more brakes, and choppy or near impossible on others, then this is most likely your problem.
