With my friends 64, I installed one of the cheap Taiwan chrome pulleys on the alternator. One of the first days after finished, we suddenly heard a loud screeching, metal to metal, in the engine comp. We pulled into a parking space and checked things out. The pulley had a crack around the belt contact area, and the inner half was scrubbing into the alternator. Replaced the pulley with a good old VW pulley, and got the money back from the VW place that sold the Taiwan thingy.
