IIRC, the general theory is to keep the wheel width close to the width of the tire. 195 tire is roughly 7-5/8" wide, therefore, 6-1/2" or 7" wheel should be used. It is more critical for low profile tires. 195/40 series would probably not mount to a 6-1/2" wheel, but 195/60 series would. If you go to tire manufacturers website or tirerack.com and look at tire specs, the give the wheel widths that would be proper for that tire. I wanted to run BFGoodrich Scorcher 205/40-16 on 16x7 wheel but their tech line said absolutely not. I now have Dunlop SP9000 tires on Porsche 16x7 wheels. 205/50-16 in rear and 195/50-16 in front.
