<< last, i pulled my emergency brake the other day and something popped and now the thing won't stay in a locked position. there is still pressure to the brake but i can't see anywhere to access the lockout mechanism to replace it. any ideas or suggestions on replacement. >> When the E-brake is overextended the ratcheting mechanism will effectively turn itself inside out. To fix it, remove the dust boot and back off the handbrake cables' adjustments to remove them from the lever. With the lever moving uninhibited, you will notice there's nothing there to catch the teeth on the ratchet and hold the brake up and in place. You should be able to raise the lever, look near it base and see where the pawl _should_ be. Chances are it's flipped over and hiding inside the ebrake. Poke around under the lever with a screwdriver while you have it fully raised and the release button depressed. If you poke it in the right place the pawl will magically reappear! Now that it's flipped around, lower it back on to the ratchet before letting off the button. It will be fine until it is overextended again. This overextension can be caused by three things, check them -- 1 - Rear brake adjustment / wear 2- Brake cable adjustment, 3 - Badly stretched or incorrect brake cables. One of my Bugs has tired brake cables and I've learned to do the ol' ratchet rearrangement in the dark using a key rather than screwdriver. Sheesh... I should buy some cables, but my money goes to the more deserving Notch!! --- Mike ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
