When I was assembling parts for my engine I ran across a pair of these manifolds. They had paired cast-in bosses for some kind of inlet or outlet, definitely VW and definitely not homemade. There were spaces cast in behind the bosses, so airflow through them would be pretty bumpy, and I eventually found a pair of smooth ones. But I always wondered what they might have been designed for.
