Re: [T3] Can you help... (valve timing)

MarkW=> Then move the fan to the 5 degree TDC point markings on the fan.

This may be where you adjust your spark timing, but for valve timing
*always use TDC.* Forget about reading from the distributor. Use the
pulley, that's why it has that bull's eye hole and everything.

=> Then I turn the fan 90 degrees anti clockwise.

As others have pointed out, you turn the engine 180 degrees for each
cylinder. You can tell you've done right because the pushrods for that
cylinder will be even with each other and all the way in.

=> at this point the markings on the fan don't line up with the centre
=> of the crankcase

[Just for future reference, that's the pulley, not the fan. You can't see
the fan unless you pull the pulley off.]

If the mark on the pulley doesn't line up with the case split, it's
because you're not at TDC. Trust that.

Forget about the points until you adjust the dwell. That comes after the
valves. The pulley and the pushrods tell all, and tell it well.

Summary:
* Remove generat§£›Œcover and timing hole cover (if you've got one).
* Remove both valve covers.
* Turn pulley to TDC.
* Look at the pushrods to determine which cylinder is at TDC.
* Adjust those valves to .006" lash.
  (Newbies: do this three or four times, till you know you're
   getting it right. There's some feel to it.)
* Rotate pulley 180 degrees, to secondary TDC mark.
* Adjust next set of valves, etc.
