The book I'm looking in has several wiring diagrams, but none of them are specifically labeled 65. All of them appear to just be copied from VW literature and all specifically call out a ground strap from the front axle beam to the body. The 3 that I can find easily so far are labeled VW 1500 Sedan, VW 1500 Karman [sic] Ghia from Sept 61 [but it is clearly a Type 3 diagram], and VW 1600 sedan from Sept 66. I also know that the later model have this strap. I think it's unlikely that VW changed just for a year or 2 in the middle, but I admit that it is possible. For me, however, the real problem I have with this is that the horn sounds every time you lock the steering full left. I don't think VW would have considered this acceptable. I believe what you have is a car that someone altered before you got to it. The only part of the explanation that I posted that I can't visualize is where the contact to the plastic mounted steering shaft bearing was made. Can anyone shed any light on this?
