I am sure on the occasions I've adjusted valves they have usually needed a bit of adjustment either way. Obviously valve and seat wear decrease adjustmentÿÓø lves a little slack is better than too tight. Wear or hammering of the rocker screw and valve stem head both lead to greater clearance, as does cam and cam-follower wear, all of which occur as the engine miles grow. The old 30hp DIN (36hp SAE) engine with the removeable integral push-rod and cam-follower could wear right down to the oilway inside - then it made a tapping noise alright (all wrong actually!). While all this is true, it is important to understand that it is only normal for valves to tighten up with wear. If they ever start loosening then there is something else wrong that will not be fixed by just adjusting valves. So normal wear tightens the valves, and when they get a little too tight they never close completely and they burn. In general, this only happens to exhaust valves.
