Re: fuel gauges

I've just had a thought about this rapid drop of fuel level; there was
discussion in the Type 3 & 4 Club news recently and on this group about the
cup that surrounds the outlet and gauge etc on FI tanks. The returning
fuel goes through a venturi, forcing fuel back into the cup so the pump
picks up fuel not air when the tank nears empty. The gallon or so in there
wouldn't take all that long to be used up compared with the rest of the
tank, but would show a significantly higher reading when the cup was full.

Jim knows the bit I'm on about. In this case the pipe was hard against the
hole, and couldn't draw the extra in from outside the cup. He pulled the
return pipe away from the cone a little, and it is now filling the cup as
required.

The gauge and sensor are quite linear, but the TANK is not. It's just
the shape of the tank that throws it off. The hash marks on the
gauges are offset to try to accomodate this, but it's still not quite
right.
