If they are lined up correctly when closed (waistline swage is continuous),
it sounds as if the hinges are worn.  The striker plate (UK speak) can be
adjusted using the screws it is held on with, but if the hinge is worn it
may not look right shut.  You could lift the hinge end a little (impact
driver may be needed to loosen those screws).  I assume/hope there isn't
bad rust in the lower part of the hinge pillar.
