This is the classic sign of a slipping clutch.  Are you sure that 
this is what you are experiencing?

If your clutch is slipping in a lower gear, it should slip WORSE if 
you upshift because you will be asking for more torque to drive the 
car in the higher gear.

It is certainly possible, but it might just be worn out clutch, or 
even a clutch cable that has no free play.  The latter is easy to fix 
at little or no expense, but you probably still have a clutch job in 
your future if you have been driving with it slipping like that.
