It is quite a puzzle to figure out all the different designations and
engines available on the T3. In the US, it was easy, biggest engine and
best equipped cars all the way. Carbs for 66-67, injection 68-73.
European models, however, are a long story.

61-63 They were 1500, with 45 hp single carb

64-65, the letters N or S were added, for NORMAL or SUPER, (not notch or
square) 1500cc single or dual carb (45 vs. 54 hp)

66, the Notchback was 1500A, single carb, the fastback were 1600TL, 54
hp dual carb and squarebaۏv.ant) 1500A single carb and 1500, 1,6
dual carb

67, Notch became 1600A 1,6 s. carb (the beetle was the 1500 this year),
Square was 1600A or 1600 (1,6 s. carb or 1,6 d. carb) while the fastback
still was the 1600TL (1,6 d. carb)

68 up, the notch were 1600A (1,6 s. carb 45 hp), 1600 (1,6 d. carb 54 hp)
or 1600E (1,6 inj. 54 hp). Square was available with the same engines,
while the Fast was TL or TLE (d. carb or inj.)

1961-69 T3 KG were always equipped with the top engine for that year, as
was the T1 KG

The squareback always carried the Variant name in addition, Variant is
still being used by VW for wagons. (i.e. 1999 Passat Variant) 1970-up,
Euro models of Notch and Square were available as Standard (1600) or
luxury (1600L). This had nothing to do with engine size but instead, the
level of equipment. The L models were standard in US.

Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.
