There should be a thin clear plastic sheet glued to the door under 
the whole trim panel. There are also small plastic/rubber "thingies" 
in each hole where a trim panel clip anchors.

Other interior trim panels will have holes in the sheet metal 
underneath glued over with squares of vinyl/cloth interior material.

You are correct about the plastic sheet. If it is left out, or torn, 
your trim panels will probably warp and demaninate when you drive in 
the rain and the presswood gets wet.

I believe the plastic sheet and the vinyl squares also have some 
effect on wind noise.
