There should be a thin clear plastic sheet glued to the door under the whole trim panel. There are also small plastic/rubber "thingies" in each hole where a trim panel clip anchors. You are correct about the plastic sheet. If it is left out, or torn, your trim panels will probably warp and demaninate when you drive in the rain and the presswood gets wet.
