It's a different approach, but taking the muffler off can sometimes be a very long job, particularly if you don't want to damage it. Also the pulley shrouding screws can be a source of problem if removed, as they often loosen again without special attention. Access to the throw-out bearing isn't too easy within the bell-housing with the engine so near. I'd say that in most cases it was easier to remove the engine; with a squareback you can use a piece of timber across the opening in the load bay to help control the engine with a rope as it's lowered. If a long piece of timber is put front to back, you can even use leverage to help lift the engine up again. Dave.
