This seems odd to me. In 30 years I have never replaced one on any car, mine or customer's. I would be concerned that there is something about the alignment between the steering gearbox and the wheel shaft that puts abnormal stress on this disk. There is normally very little flex called for in these. If you think the quality is a problem I'm sure I have an old but good used OE one.
