Well, I pulled the head off the left side (#3 & #4). The lower head bolts were a bit loose. The #3 piston is toast... Not too bad, but one side is chewed away. After checking with a few people, and my local VW shop I'm going to rebuild the whole thing and then just swap it into the beige Squareback. Fortunately (at this point anyway), it's not a rush job as the engine in the beige Squareback is still running.
