The attraction was certainly able to be felt; I'm sure it would have
picked up an M6 nut, for example.  I don't think I threw it away, so
when it surfaces again next time I sort things out in the garage,
I'll try it.

Forging changes the grain structure of the steel and seems to lock
in
whatever magnetic field is there when the forging is done.  It seems
strange that there would be much field there, however.  How strong
were the ones you tested?  Could you pick up a steel nut?
