Hi Kate, You have to remove the oil strainer plate to clean the strainer. Get a large drain pan to put under the strainer plate, then loosen the (6) - 10mm nuts and let the oil drain out. Then you can complete taking the strainer plate off. Be sure to clean out the metal screen oil strainer. I just use WD-40 spray.
