The pads on the later calipers last longer, but the braking is the same. The late calipers will not fit unless you also put on the late steering knuckles, so this becomes quite a job. The little gismo is called a "damper", but it is just hollow with nothing inside it. I find it rather mysterious myself and am tempted to leave it off next time.
