Most change 6 volt to 12 as a result of (a) problems with corroded terminals etc, or (b) wanting to use modern accessories like stereo systems. If it's working well and you've no desire to much more than a radio, there's not much point in disturbing the system. I recall back in '64 the lights of my father's new Squareback seemed great, but maybe it was just in comparison with a '59 Beetle! However, you will find 6volt CD players are a challenge to locate, even more difficult than a voltage convertor to handle the power needed for much more than a radio. Dave.
