Work on the 1500 began in the late fifties, and official announcement of a new model was made in early 1961. "Spy" photos were published in Motor Trend at about this time (early '61) as well. 1962 Notchbacks were available for purchase in late 1961, and 1962 Squarebacks were available for purchase early in the 1962 calendar year.
