Phil, I have a tool that I use for similar problems. You should find one at most auto part stores. It's a long, flexible rod with a plunger at one end. When you depress the plunger four tongs extend out from the opposite end. When you let the plunger back out (it's spring loaded) the four tongs come together and move back inside the rod. When they come together is when they are able to grasp the desired object. Don't know the name of the tool, though. It's very similar to the magnet tool you describe below.
