RE: Tranny heat?

The reason the trannies are dying is mostly because they are old! As for
working on them you're best bet is to ship it out to a professional
air-cooled
VW tranny builder. Get some VW magazines, check out the ads, and call
around.
No idea about a tranny cooler...good idea, though, but where would one stick
the
cooler?

Some more bad aspect of the single carbs sticking through the engine cover,
aside from the obvious loss of cargo volume:

  Carb encased (like yours)-
All intake air is heated. Reduces gas mileage and can be the source
of
a rich condition. Once the engine is in its operating temp you want cool
intake
air. On bigger engines (ones that suck more cfm) or on setups that have the
covering too close to the carb/air cleaner it can be a source of reduced
performance by suffocation, that is, too much air restriction to get the
proper
volume of air to the filter.

  Carb not encased-
Potential for exhaust and other nasty fumes to enter cabin through
the
hole where the carb pokes out. Increased noise levels. Excess engine heat
can
enter cabin (not good in the summer :)

Granted, some of these possibilities can occur but not be noticeable because
the
negative effects are so small, even negligible. They become more of a
factor
for performance engines used as daily drivers.

Oh yeah, welcome to the gang. When are you gonna have pictures for us to
see
it?
