As far as I have ever seen, only the early VW-1500 and 1500 'S' 
notchbacks had the switch for the rear compartment light operated off of 
a door jam style switch. My panel van (basically a 1965 squareback) has 
the metal cover with the light but you can only turn it on or off (my 
switch wont allow any other function.). I cannot recall ever seeing a 
squareback with a light in the back that turns on when the door opens 
however I could be and sometimes are wrong.
