RE: Heat

Ned,
First, you'll notice I'm on the Type III mailing list so there is no need to
copy me on messages that are sent to the list as well. Just an FYI :)

Second: Is that Square for sale *really* a five-speed? There is only one
Type
III that I know of that is a five-speed and it belongs to Kenik Hassel.
Where
did you see this car (Bellingham, WA; Sparks, NV; where?!). Take a look at
the
shifter -- if it doesn't have a button sticking out the side of the shifter
handle with the word BERG or GENE BERG or something to that effect on the
top of
the handle then it's not a Gene Berg five-speed and thus not a good tranny
that
will stand up to a high powered engine. What size is the engine? Yeah,
please
get some specifics.

Thirdly, all air-cooled VW engines came stock with cooling flaps. What
normally
happens with our poor Type IIIs is they are rebuilt and the cooling system
is
left out, which is probably the case for you. Funny, when any water cooled
engine is rebuilt you never see them not install the water pump and radiator
since doing so would destroy the engine in a few miles. Without getting
into
thermal dynamics and metal dynamics and air-cooled engine philosophies let's
just say their is POTENTIAL for more harm to come to an engine that does not
have the cooling flaps installed, particularly during the warm-up period.
Depending where you live it can also make warm-ups take longer (cooler
climates).

Put them back in, in full operating condition, if you can.
