Re: More engine/tranny ??s

Measure the height of the engine before you start, I don't remember
the number, but you want to have at least that much room under the
car when it's time to slide the engine out. Just put jack stands
under the rear torsion housing, leave the front wheels on the ground.
I always get help from a friend. One person "drives" the jack and
the other steadies things from above. On IRS cars place a 2x4 fore
and aft across the engine hatch and wrap a rope over that and under
the bell housing to support it when the engine is out.

Remove all the wires and cables and heat ducts. Then put a small
plywood plate on your jack and support the engine under the sump
plate. Put enough 4x4s under each heat exchanger that you can lower
the engine onto them and still pull the jack and plywood plate out.
Unbolt the engine and pull to the rear and set down on the 4x4s.

Pull out the jack and then one man lifts one side of the engine at a
time while the other removes 4x4s and walk the engine down to the
ground. I have a piece of 1/4" Masonite that I lay there before I
start and the engine will slide out nicely on that

I agree that it i usually easier to remove the engine first and the
tranny next, but it can be done together. putting them back in
together is significantly easier since mating the splines is simple
when done outside the car.
