Not so dumb if you've never had the valve train apart or run the thing without a rocker cover on. The lifter at the camshaft end of the train has a hole in the side of it that conducts oil from the pressurized gallery in the case up the hollow pushrod to the rocker arm. The pushrod cup on the end of the stock arm has a hole drilled in it that intersects with another one that goes the length of the arm to the rocker arm pivot. Not a lot of oil is necessary, but there's enough flying around that it'll get you coated in a short time if you leave a rocker cover off. Valve stems make do with what's flying around.
