I periodically get a batch of sheet tin sand blasted and then repaint
it with a commercial grade of catalyzed polyurethane enamel. This
has stood the test of time very well. I have never tried anything
with the heater boxes, however.

Exhaust wrap is commonly done between the head and the turbo on turbo
charged cars. This prevents the loss of evergy from the hot exhaust
gasses before it gets to the turbo. In a type three, unlike a
beetle, there is nothing to be concerned about with extra heat in the
engine compartment because the cooling air is drawn in from the
outside via the large bellows at the rear.
