The long studs passed through the bottom of the rocker box and into a
meaty part of the head. This seemed like a good idea, but it soon
became clear that engine vibration caused these heads to develop oil
leaks where the studs passed through. The fix was to just thread
them into the rocker box, thus avoiding all the relative motion that
wore away metal and caused the leaks.

This was a standard fix years ago, and someone out there can
probably do this for you now. You might call RIMCO in Southern Cal.
It is worth doing, especially if the heads are already off the car.
All heads made after the early 60s were made with the short studs.
