Your car is considered a 1.6litre (1.6L). When it comes to engines you just round up. You can put any engine in any car, it just depends on how much money you have! I believe the Porsche engine being referenced is either a 912 or 914 (a 356 is and upright engine and could possibly be converted). But you could install a Type IV engine since it's basically the same as a 914. However, you would have the task of cutting sheet metal and fabbing brackets and just plain squeezing it in. You can have your engine, depending upon its condition, built up more but you would have to remove the FI and install carburetors. The more power you want the more it's gonna cost you. Is it safe? Uhm, what do you mean by safe? Whenever you deviate from stock, like build a bigger engine, you generally will shorten the life (this is a rule of thumb and not etched in stone). You don't have to worry about it exploding (well, unless the fuel line comes off the carb...). What do you mean by 120++? If horsepower is the figure then yes, it is possible. My engine was dynoed at 123hp for 2003cc (bigger bore and longer stroke, it's NOT a TYPE IV ENGINE!). If you're talking miles per hour then that's another story. Our air-cooled engines are very dependent on engine rpm and the transaxle gearing and wheel size are integral parts of the formula -- I know because I've gone through this nightmare with my current tranny and my five-speed that's being built. You mess with just one of them and you can seriously jeopardize the engine's cooling ability. If you want to go that fast you either have a completely different engine, are strictly just racing, or have a very high hp engine (with an equally short life span). Soooo, could you be a tad more specific? :) Toby Erkson air_cooled_nut@pobox.com <-- Please use this address for email responses '72 VW Squareback 1.6L bored and stroked to 2.0L '75 Porsche 914 1.8L, ORPCA member Portland, Oregon, http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/8501/ ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________ Subject: Performance Engine.. Author: type-3-errors@umich.edu at SMTPGATE_MIME Date: 2/19/98 3:02 PM I have a 69 Square, and it has the stock engine with fuel injection.. I think it's like a 1584cc or something like that.. Anyway, I want to make my car real fast. I had heard a while back that you can put Porche engines into our T-3's.. Which engines can fit?? Or am I wrong by wanting to do this. Could I build a faster engine with the VW case and just adding performance parts?? Also, how safe is this..?? and how fast would I be able to go?? I haven't a clue. Is it possible to 120++ in a suped-up Square??
