Big difference if you are trying to mate the manifold for a single port head
to a dual port head, or vicey versey. In the words of the scholar, "Cain't be did!" 

Others on the list will explain the difference well, so I will go on to point 2:

May I suggest an alternative?  Gene Berg sells (for about $10.00+) a nifty
temperature sensor that sits down inside the dipstick hole in a 
Type 1.  He states that this can be used in a Type III that has a universal
case or a Type 1 case that still has the original oil tube.

I have this temp sensor on my Van and it is wunnerful!  Drives me berserk to see it flicker 
occasionally!

There is a bigger issue about using a T1 case in a T3...and that is the matter of how
you are gonna fill that sucker with oil.  But.... more 'bout that later...
