May I suggest an alternative? Gene Berg sells (for about $10.00+) a nifty temperature sensor that sits down inside the dipstick hole in a Type 1. He states that this can be used in a Type III that has a universal case or a Type 1 case that still has the original oil tube. I have this temp sensor on my Van and it is wunnerful! Drives me berserk to see it flicker occasionally! There is a bigger issue about using a T1 case in a T3...and that is the matter of how you are gonna fill that sucker with oil.
