(Matt, you may want to post this to the Passat mailing list). Something I would like to add but take it as you will... Adding synthetic oil can make a difference in available horsepower. To prove what I already knew in an actual test, I tested my Jetta using an accelerometer (G-Tech(R)). It can measure various events like 0-60mph times, 1/4-mile time & distance, and wheel horsepower. Pretty nifty device and accurate enough for testing automotive changes. I tested my car, a stock 2.0L '95 Jetta III GL with 1/2 tank of gas, with conventional oil in the engine and manual transmission. I then drained it of all oil and replaced it with pure synthetic, Mobil 1 for the engine and Castrol for the tranny. I then filled the tank to 1/2 full (actually, it was a tad over 1/2) and went through my tests again. I made five runs for the 0-60mph test and five runs for the hp test, both in the conventional and synthetic runs. The results: Using all synthetic oil gave me an average of 5hp more at the wheels and decreased my 0-60mph time by an average of 0.48sec -- that's pretty damn good for a simple oil change! <sarcasm> As a side note, my best 0-60mph was a gut punching 9.06sec and horsepower was stampeding in at 87hp. </sarcasm> Remember, we don't recommend you drown your engine in synthetic if it's "experienced" unless you have a full flow oil filtration system and you change the filter multiple times during the introduction phase. Best to wait for a new engine and put synthetic in it after it has been broken in. And remember, for those of you who drive an automatic there is synthetic oil for them as well.
