Ahh, but, could you get by? If you mounted the generator a la T3, and just left the gen stand in place, so you could add oil that way? I'm just trying to think from the poor guys' standpoint. You might have to leave the engine cover off (noisy and dirty), but if he had to get to work... ? I've been there (with a T1), and it ain't no fun. I had to take a motor that had dropped #3, and scrape the bigger chunks of metal out of the bottom of the case, swap out *a* piston and jug, one junkyard head with new valves (and old springs) (lapped), and proceed to drive the poor Frankenstein for like 8 months. Little single port 1600 on a bone stock 68 T1. It ran, but it took lots of ingenuity, as I was working part time type hours, and had *no* cash. *I* would rather it was rebuilt correctly, but if the guys' in a bind? -----Original Message----- From: Jim Adney [SMTP:jadney@vwtype3.org] Sent: Tuesday, December 01, 1998 4:28 PM To: type3@vwtype3.org Subject: Re: [T3] Upright engine in a T3 On 29 Nov 98, at 22:16, Steven Ayres wrote: > Here's the path of most sense and least resistance: strip the T1 down to > the long block and dress it with parts from one of your T3s. The only problem with this approach is that there is not place on the T1 case to mount the oil filler/dipstick, plus I forgot to mention earlier that 69-73 T3s need the rear mount crossbar, so for the late cars especially, you really do need an engine built on a T3 case. In other words don't try to make do with the T1 engine. You'll waste all your time and effort working on a part of the project that is doomed from the start. Save yourself, your time, and your money for the T3 approach.
