The tire sizing is pretty straight forward. For example: 195/60ZR15 195 is the maximum width of the tire at the side wall in millmeters. it is not the tread width. Tread width will be less. 60 is the side wall height as a percentage of the width. In this case 60% or 117 mm. Z is the speed rating. Near to the end of the alphabet is faster. R designates radial 15 is the wheel diameter in inches....( there we go again mixing units) It has always been my understanding that the default aspect ratio for the side wall height is 85%. So if it is not specified in the side wall markings, as in the case of the 165R15, it is assumed to be 85%. Therefore our standard tire is 165 mm (6.5 inches) wide (on a 4.5 inch rim) and is 26.0 inches in diameter (15+0.85*165*2/25.4). BTW the Empi's should be 5.5 inches wide and will fit inside the 165R15 without a problem. -- John Jaranson Research Engineer Ford Motor Company SRL 2621 Dearborn, MI 48121 (313)323-0553 (313)845-4724 FAX ------------------------------------------------------------------- Too much?
