I think the timing is wrong. I'm guessing that tapping you are hearing is actually pinging -- the situation that is causing it points to pinging (don't do it, it's BAD for the engine!). Try lessening the timing (retard it) a little bit, say a couple of degrees at a time until the problem stops.
